Functional Medicine Guide 02

Functional nutrition and metabolic health

A food-first, personalized approach to nutrient adequacy, dietary patterns and responsible supplementation.

Food first

Functional nutrition begins with the pattern, not a single “super ingredient.”

A useful nutrition assessment considers food access, culture, appetite, digestive tolerance, medications, laboratory findings, preferences and the ability to sustain change. Supplements may help address a defined intake gap or formulation goal, but they are not a substitute for dietary quality.

01

Diversity

Build meals from varied minimally processed foods, colorful plants, suitable protein sources and appropriate fats.

02

Metabolic context

Meal timing, carbohydrate quality, protein distribution, movement and sleep can influence metabolic health together.

03

Personal tolerance

Restriction should have a clear reason, time frame and reintroduction plan where appropriate.
